Reddit is Buzzing (And Not in a Good Way)
So I was scrolling through the r/CryptoCurrency subreddit this morning when a thread made me do a full spit-take with my coffee. The headline was a wild one: "Former NYC Mayor Eric Adams rugs his own memecoin just 30 minutes after launch and pockets over $2.5M."
You read that right. A politician allegedly launches a memecoin, pumps it to his followers, and then yanks the rug out from under them in less time than it takes to order a pizza. One user on the thread claimed the total liquidity pool drained was over $3.4 MILLION. Insane.
The Community Reaction: Shocked, But Not Surprised
The best part of these threads is always the comments, and this one didn't disappoint. The overall vibe was a massive, collective eye-roll. It was a perfect mix of anger, cynicism, and dark humor.
A huge chunk of the community had zero sympathy for the "investors." As one user put it, "If you’re still getting rugged at this point you’re smooth." Another just asked, "Who tf is still buying these coins?" It’s a harsh take, but in a world of endless celebrity cash grabs, they’ve got a point.
Of course, there was plenty of rage directed at the politician. Users called him a "grade A slimeball" and suggested this was probably just a creative way to pay his legal fees or even launder money. The community was already predicting the inevitable excuse: "I was hacked!" We've all seen that movie before, right?
My favorite comments, though, were the jokes. You had the classic sarcastic, "In it for the tech," and another user pointing out, "Man, even scammers are becoming impatient in this market!"
My Take: This is a Fire Drill, Not a Fire
Okay, let's get real for a second. This particular story looks like a classic piece of internet fiction designed to stir the pot. But here's the thing: the story doesn't even matter. The fact that everyone on that thread immediately believed it could be true is the real headline here.
It's plausible because we see this kind of garbage happen almost every single day. An influencer, a celebrity, or some other public figure drops a coin with no utility, no plan, and no locked liquidity. Their followers pile in hoping to get rich, and instead, they become the exit liquidity. It's the oldest scam in the crypto book.
This is your constant reminder: NEVER, EVER trust a celebrity memecoin. I don't care if it's a politician you support, your favorite actor, or a TikTok star. The project isn't about you. You are the product. They are using their fame to fleece you. Do your own research. Check if the liquidity is locked. And if something feels too good to be true, it's because they're about to run off with your money.
What Do You Think?
